1. How to Read Fingerspelling:
  • Sound out the letters! This will help you understand a word quickly.
  • Do NOT SAY each letter! First you say the letter, then you must remember each one, then you must put them together, then you try to sound it out, then you realize you forget how to spell the word.... Saying each letter takes too long. Sounding out is faster.

5. Fingerspelling Etiquette:

  • Face the person you are addressing. Your palm faces your conversation partner. (except for G, H and Q, which face downward.)
  • Hold your fingerspelling hand in a comfortable position at shoulder height.
  • Keep your hand near your face. Do not cover your face or mouth.
  • With your lips, silently phrase the word you are fingerspelling. Mouth the word, not the letters.
  • If a letter, repeats, move your hand from back to front to indicate a double letter.
  • Pause between words.
  • Denote acronyms (USA, LOL) by moving each letter in a circular way. This informs your partner that the letters are not one word.
